Under normal driving conditions during daylight the battery should be receiving a charge from the dynamo. Its only when you have the headlamps on that the dynamo may not be able to keep up with demand and so the battery will be loosing charge. Next time the car is driven during the day for more than a few miles the dynamo will top the battery back up.

Starting the engine after it hasn't be used for a week or more will take a fair amount of current from the battery as the engine needs to turn over many times for the manual petrol pump to fill the float bowl. If you petrol pump has a priming lever (not all do) it is wise to operate this to fill the float bowl as this will help the engine to start quickly.

Your limiting factors may be the length and height.  A longer battery may be difficult to lower into the box. A taller one can short out on the lid as I found when I used an MGB battery.

The battery box is double the width of the current battery... I would just need to remove the wooden divider someone has fitted. That's great thanks... my main concern was if the car electrics would struggle to fully charge the larger battery. Many thanks

The capacity of the battery has no effect on the car's electrics so you can fit the highest capacity battery that will fit in the battery box. Its only the size of the battery box that limits your choice.

Hello I have an Austin 10 4 and I am looking to buy a new battery. The car is still 6 volts and can be hard to start on a single charge sometimes so I'm wondering if I can fit a larger 6 volt battery (115Ah) without the need to have any adjustment to the electrics?
