The sturdy design and construction of the dependable Austin models made them ideal vehicles for commercial use. Throughout the 1930s most of the range - from 7 to 18hp - were available as vans. The taxicab market became dominated by the Austin Taxi, based on the "Heavy" Twelve.

Taxi bodies were designed to meet the complex regulations for Hackney carriages plying for hire. The Austin Twelve taxi was strong, easy to maintain, reliable and economical. A hire purchase finance system was offered to taxi operators.
