Re: Austin 10 halfshaft
Hi, It is much quicker to buy a used axle than dismantle your axle and replace the halfshaft. The Club did have an old used axle 2 years ago but it may have gone by now. I am lucky that in many miles in 10s, I have yet to have a broken halfshaft. I have replaced a rear axle twice over the years with...

Re: Vehicle year
Hi Mike, I agree that the engine IG35327 is about April 1934 - (see the cast date below the distributor on the offside, shown as, say, 15.4.4.) Is the chassis number G35171 and not 635171? That would confirm mid-April 1934 and that it has the original engine. Otherwise I am confused by the number. C...

Re: 1938 Ten Cambridge Suspected blown head gasket.
Hi, Peter is 100% right. However, I do have very good second hand original Payen gaskets from engines I dismantled in the past which are surplus to my needs. If you are interested, please message me on this site Phil_Taylor with your address and I will post one or two to you free of charge. These ar...

Re: 1932 Austin 10 - Use of engine coolant
The original garage chart supplied with 1932 cars said 'drain the rad if frost likely. Refill with rainwater.' No mention of antifreeze. In your case rainwater may be in short supply so tap water is fine. Any hardness in the water will be deposited in the first few hundred miles and then the tapwate...

Re: Valve guide punch
I have done this to about 7 engines without any problem - particularly if you put the new guides in the freezer before fitting. The time is taken to make brass washers from old rally plaques (which we have many!) The old guides seem to move quite easily with a reasonable clout. Make sure you do not ...

Re: Valve guide punch
I have used a stepped steel punch - the bottom part is the valve stem diameter and the top part bigger and use a brass washer on the step to avoid damaging the top edge of the guide. Where they can be obtained I do not know? A good friend gave it to me 45 yrs ago!!

Re: Austin 10 Steam, pouring from overflow
You need about 14 pints or about 8 litres of water otherwise it will boil. (You can fill it up to overflowing and the surplus will come out of the overflow as it heats up and expands).

Re: Heater
I did this over 45 years ago. I cut a 5" square hole in the front of the nearside tool box under the bonnet. Fitted a heat exchanger behind (from a Mini?), made slits in the tool box floor and blanked off that end of the tool box. Connections to top and bottom hose and relied on thermosyphon to get ...

Re: 1935 Austin 10 camshaft wanted
The post 1936 camshafts run on white metal circular bearings. All earlier ones have no bearing so run on the machined holes in the block. I have never seen any significant wear in the block on the earlier engines. I have had difficulty fitting a later camshaft into a earlier block, needing long-wind...
