Re: Mid 1933 10/4 steering box removal

Further to my inspection of the steering box. I took the casing that houses the worm gear off and discovered that what I thought was the end of the out put shaft is actually a hardened steel boss, it was loose and could be turned with fingers. I think this boss is supposed to be a press fit into the...

Re: Mid 1933 10/4 steering box removal

Managed to get the Steering box out. I had to disassemble the bottom ball joint from the steering box output shaft drop link, remove the right hand end of the steering drag link and let it drop down, remove the starter motor, remove the brackets that hold the two terminal blocks, remove the oil fill...

Re: Mid 1933 10/4 steering box removal

Thanks Austin Ollis, I still have the box bolted to the chassis but I cant get the drop arm off the gearbox output shaft, which is splined. This needs to be removed before removing the gear box from the chassis I would think? I am guessing it has been some time since it was last off and has probably...

Mid 1933 10/4 steering box removal

I need to remove my steering box to the bench to address a persistent grease/oil seepage coming from the casing opposite the output shaft. I can’t quite see the area but by feel there is some sort of rounded cap pressed into the casing, hence the seepage. I have most items associated removed or loos...

Re: Petrol pump 10/4 1933

Can’t think of any reason why not Jasper. You will want to use a gasket behind the plate to “limit” oil weeping down the outside of block. These engines seem to generate a lot of oil splash and mist. This side of the engine relies on mist being forced up into the valve chest via 3 ( or 4 ) quite sma...

Re: Detaching throttle from 26va zenith carb

Jasper, My 1933 10/4 with Zenith 26VA carb had an adjustable type ball ends in brass cages. (You spin the cages one way or the other to make the link longer or shorter) The ball ends are held captive by a brass slotted screw end. A small split pin slide slides through a hole in the cage and goes thr...

Re: Lucas W3 IGN warning light

My assumption is that they ( Lucas ) did not want a too bright 12v or 6v lamp on the instrument panel... too distracting. But bearing in mind once the engine is running and generating volts the IGN warning lamp goes out. Running a 2.5v with a dropping resistance ( wire wound around the Lamp holder )...

Re: Lucas W3 IGN warning light

Thanks Rod, great explanation.
The bulb in the 6 v lamp was a 6v labelled one.
I am wondering now if a PO re wired it wrong. There is evidence of it being repaired previously.
Cheers

Re: Lucas W3 IGN warning light

Thanks Rod and Bill.
I have a 6v and a 12 v one to fix up.
The bulb 💡 that was in the 6 v lamp is labelled 6v!
With a 30 ohm resistor on a 6 v supply it is way too bright.
I will experiment with the resistance value and get to run a bit dimmer.
Cheers

Lucas W3 IGN warning light

I need to repair a couple of these W3 IGN warning lights. The ones I have, have damaged insulated damping resistor wire so I cant establish the correct ohmage. From memory I think about 26 Ohms. For authenticity sake I would like to replace with new resistance wire, I can get some measuring 63 Ohms/...
