Renewing Your Driving Licence Online wirh DVLA

Post by peter_winney » Mon May 13, 2024 5:26 pm

Have clocked up nearly another 3 years and got a reminder thru' the post from DVLA to renew my driving licence. Form helpfully suggests doing so online. But form does not tell you that you need to know your:-
  • Passport number
  • NI number
as well as your licence No. Apparently need passport No to get digital photo. but what about photo on old driving licence?

Fortunately the system did not throw me out while waiting for me to find these documents. I am sure it was not so complicated last time.

Tells you to cut up your old licence and send it to DVLA but blowed if I am going to do that until my new one arrives. After all it is stll valid for several months yet. They send you the reminder 90 days before expiry. In anticipation of postal delays, no doubt.

Somewhere I have still got my old red cardboard driving licence

Just done mine Peter and the new licence was with me in just a few days. I’ve kept the old one just in case and yes, I’ve still got my old red licence too!

I'm wondering how I'll be treated in 2026 when I'l be 70, no photo id as no passport and still on paper driving license...

You will be treated the same as everybody. You will lose your entitlement to drive small trucks and minibuses unless you get medical and eyesight checks and send in the papers by post, with risk of getting them lost. After you have done that, at some expense including paying for your medical checkup, and you have got your shiny new 70 plus licence including these two categories you will find that nobody will let you rent these vehicles or let you drive them as an unpaid volunteer because you are "over 70". Irrespective of what is says on your new licence. :x

Might as well renew online

Paper licences quite rare now. Had to change mine when I moved house.
