Does the club have a list of preferred roadside assistance companies?

Not as far as I know, but it does have a preferred insurer, - RH insurance whose cover includes breakdown.
Whatever you do, don't use Green Flag as apparently they've stopped coming out to cars over 16 years old!
Green Flag used to be OK with old cars, I used them years ago a couple of times.
Once to come out to my Sunbeam Rapier and once to my then Morris 1000 Traveller which at the time would have been 25 years old but if back then they were operating under their current age restricted rules I'd have been stranded.

No it does not recommend anyone. One reason is that the Club Insurance scheme, by RH Specialist Insurance includes a breakdown and recovery service - https://www.rhspecialistinsurance.co.uk/

Like most other recovery services they use outside contractors but unlike others they will accept the need for recovery without first sending out someone to check. Not only that but they keep in regular contact checking progress with you until you are picked up.

Unlike the RAC who will leave you stranded by the roadside for hours, send the wrong recovery vehicles with an incompetent mechanic who will damage the car, and then put you at the back of the queue (even if you are in one of their priority risk categories) and take hours longer to send (if you are lucky) an appropriate recovery vehicle some 6 hours after you first called. Oh, and they will refuse any compensation for the delay or damage.

Saturday had to use the RH recovery scheme when the 10 refused to go beyond the boundaries of BANES. I was given an ETA of 90 minutes and within that time the Hinton truck had arrived and the car loaded. Also got a text & call from Hinton telling me they were on the way and a call from RH to check that they had arrived. Back home before my wife who had abandoned me to go home by bus. So am pleased with recovery service.

As a side issue used the "Be Seen Screen" for first time in anger. Worked for most drivers but there still seems to be a stupid minority who cannot look beyond the end of their bonnet and drive right up behind and stop where they cannot pass. Doh!
