Electrical fault

Post by Peterjersey » Wed Oct 14, 2020 6:56 pm

Can you help with a problem I have . When I start the engine the ignition light goes out and the ammeter shows a charge. After a couple of minutes the ammeter swigs to discharge and the ignition goes out. When I turn off the ignition the light comes on ! After about 2 minutes the light goes out and you hear a click from the regulator. I have already replaced the regulator twice. Any advice would be appreciated.

Some of the ATDC contributors may have struck this themselves and have a specific cause they will share, but FWIW it sounds like you have at least a wiring concern or possibly an ignition switch issue. The warning light is supplied power on one side via the ignition switch and is connected to the 'D' circuit of the charging system on the other, so it should not come on with the key off and the generator not rotating.
