Austin Ten Drivers Club

Good evening all
I understood that a 1933 10/4 did not have brake lights or indicators. On re carpeting ESL 214 I discovered that the drivers wooden floor had rotted, and on removal found a stop light switch. The electrical engineer came today and found in and out current at six volts.The stop lights are now functional!!!
Was I wrong in thinking that stop lamps were a later addition???
Any info greatly appreciated.

Jasper, my 1933 10/4 has brake switch and light which is working.
My car also has the metal fitment brackets each side of the scuttle to fit Trafficators.
Trafficator switch is on the steering column and wiring exists right to each bracket.
From the literature I have Trafficators would seem to have been optional when buying the car new.

Many thanks for your reply...I would be very grateful if you would post a picture of the steering column switches. I can find no trace of the indicator switch on Elsie, or the scuttle fittings!!

All Austin 10s had a brake light from 1932 when the model was introduced. The switch fitted on the chassis is operated by a spring attached to the mechanical brakes.

Tens only had trafficators as standard from August 1933 when the model changed to 12v electrics and X-braced chassis frame. On chrome-rad (flat rad) cars the switch is an awkward one clamped onto the steering column below the steering wheel where it is not easily be reached, and is not self-cancelling.
