GC prefix is the "Car No" also known as the body number. Early Austin 10 saloons from April 1932 until August 1933 had GC numbers. These numbers do not align with the chassis Nos prefixed G.
Source: ATDC Technical Reprints Vol 1 Appendix "Model Types of the Austin Ten-Four"

Austin did not align chassis and car numbers until August 1936.

No, an Austin 10 engine number would start 1G followed by the number, for example 1G1234.

''Austin did not align chassis and car numbers until August 1936'' this means the chassis number didn't match the body number until August 1936 when the Cambridge model was launched.

Yes it is - it's many years since I looked at my 10's engine (!) and the log book makes the 1 look like an I !!
