Elsie's owner is an idiot!

Post by Jasper » Tue Feb 01, 2022 12:48 pm

Hi
Whilst trying to sort out my starting problems, I stupidly knocked one of my spark plug knurled nuts into cylinder 2.

I have tried fishing it out, but just cannot track it down... where will it go?? Will I have to remove head and manifold. I am getting very depressed!!!

Many thanks in advance for any advice

Jasper
Ooh nasty! There is a tool consisting of a long flexible tube with a "grasper" at the end of it. Might be able to reach into plug hole and grope around for the nut. Not sure where I got mine - Halford's maybe or a classic car show. I will try and post a photo of it.

Hi Jasper
If you can beg borrow or steal an endiscope you should be able to see it. Then using a grasper you may b e able to retrieve it. I have also used a thin stick with a small dap of super glue on the end to pick up difficult to reach objects.

Hi Jasper
You need to take all the plugs out and using the stating handle bring No2 piston really slowly up to the top get someone else to help you one watching the piston and the other carefully tuning the handle then with a piece of soft copper wire you should locate it with plenty of patience

Glad I did as certainly in need of a decoke. Needs new gasket, but hey, loads of learning learnt and believe it or not, hugely enjoyable..takes me back a few years as well... Thanks for all suggestions

Following on from your previous post, what's the situation now regarding the ~1 inch of piston travel?

Hi
Both my friend and i got it wrong...there is full 3.5 inch travel on the pistons and all very smooth. Grateful thanks to all who helped me in my distress...Just shows how a lack of knowledge leads to false conclusions...Mind you last time I took a head off was 1975!!!!
Just got to put it back together now!!!
