Austin 12/4 Harley - Buying Advice Requested

Post by Colintree » Sat Mar 26, 2022 8:49 am

Hi there. Just wondered if I couldpick the brains of ATDC members. I am thinking seriously of looking out for an Austin 12/4 Harley. I have seen a few cars offered for sale and they look so attractive: Perpendicular Austin but with that special elegance. Are their any particular concerns or 'things to look out for' when considering these models. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Colin

Hi
The 12/4 Harleys are really nice cars. !933 and before have crash gearboxs which might take a bit of getting used to but they were very robust are once you get used to them nice to use.

Hello Brian. Thanks for mentioning your 12 /6 Harley. A six cylinder would I am sure be very nice, but I am a lot more used to 4 cylinder engines, so think it probably best to continue looking for a 12/4. Everything I have read about these models seems to be very positive. As far as I can tell Austin's reputation for building cars of quality established during the vintage era seemed to be mainained linto the early 30's with the introduction of the 'light' 12 models. Fingers crossed I might become a future owner/ driver. If any member has or knows of a suitable 12/4 for sale I would be very pleased to hear about it - even a car needing recommissioning or some restoration work would be happily considered. I greatly value originality. Many thanks Colin

Colin
Keep looking. It is worth waiting for the "right" car (Unlike me - I just jump in the first that comes along!) The 12/4 Harley is a nice car to drive and looks good. I was once lent one to use on the scenic run of a National Rally when I had turned up in a modern.
