Increases in Tax

Cost increases pending for motorists in the near future include:

• Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) for moderns - increases wef 1 April 2024
• Fuel - 5p reduction in fuel duty due to end 31 March - unless the reduction is extended in The Budget. Tax is currently 52.9p per litre

New Restrictions in Scotland

Low Emission Zones (LEZ) will be introduced in three Scottish cities this year: in Dundee on May 30th and in Aberdeen & Edinburgh on 1 June.

Unlike England's Clean Air Zones where non-compliant vehicles pay a daily fee, Scotland's low emission zones prohibit non-compliant vehicles, and the fine is  substantially more than a daily charge.

Historic Vehicles

Although "Historic Vehicles" are in theory exempt from UK LEZ charges it would be wise to check online before driving into a clean air zone.  Some Local Authorities have collected charges for non-compliant vehicles in advance of the date of an LEZ coming into effect and others have fined compliant vehicles due to inadequate records.
