Re: Cambridge
Hi, As far as I am aware there was always a 'Standard' and a 'de Luxe' version of most models. The Fleet or 'Commercial Traveller' version had Rexine upholstery, no sunroof, one sun vizor and no bumpers. I think the Fleet cars were not sold singly but only on contract terms to commercial buyers. Pro...

Re: Austin 10 GS1 1945 colours
Like the other Peter, my father bought an Austin in 1945, a Ten which was black with brown upholstery, although registered in Glasgow as EGA 116, the manager of the southern branch of our family business (owing to war damage, then based at De Havilland Airfield at Hatfield) had to go and collect the...

Re: Leaf springs
Hi Neil, I have certainly dismantled and wire brushed leaf springs, but always reassembled them the way they came off. I think it would be counter productive to reverse the leaves as they are manufactured with a natural camber. In any case, the main leaf has curled bush housings at each end so there...

Re: Austin gs1 wheel rims
Hi Markydd, Your car was conventionally designed to the standards of the time when it was produced, probably '45 to '47. You have rigid axles front and rear. If you fit radial tyres you will experience a harsher ride than with crossplies and in addition you will find the steering heavier. The increa...

Re: Engine colour
Hi Bob,
That's true and it's how BMC advertised it, but the Loadstar cab had an adjustable drivers' seat and a two seater bench, the 'threepenny bit' cab had two single seats. I liked the earlier truck better.

Peter C. [6515]

Re: Engine colour
Hi Peter, We had one of the early BS1 Sixteens and I remember it and the earliest A40 Devon vans which we also had, all had Moss Green coloured engines, so I think it likely that all the OHV engines were the same colour. We also had a later BW1 Countryman, a Hampshire Pick Up and a Hereford saloon t...

Re: Lucas W3 IGN warning light
American cars of the period described the purpose of the warning lamp as [Generator Not Charging] which really describes its function.

Re: Tax MOT , exempt
Hi Daren, As far as I am aware, it has always been the date of manufacture, but this is not straightforward to prove, so normally the date used will be the date of first registration. Anomalies will arise, particularly if some misguided person has transferred the number plate to a more modern vehicl...
