Re: Austin 10/4 1933

Seriously..............if you're getting full rotation of the crankshaft you implied when you say you are getting spark and fuel I would leave cylinder head removal until last. If you're trying to assess piston movement imho it would be better to drop the oil pan and have a look from underneath-less...

Re: Austin 10/4 1933

Something weird here! I’ve edited my post after reading some of the others You say you have spark, if you’re checking this by rotating the crankshaft and the crankshaft turns 360+ degrees then the timing chain must be intact otherwise no distributor cam rotation and no spark because the camshaft isn...

Re: tracking down an Austin 10

That's interesting Peter, in this country (NZ) most of the ownership details are unavailable to the general public anyway, even past owners for your own vehicle (apart from businesses and car dealers) and you can remove what's left on public view by notifying the relevant authority. "Authorized enti...

Re: Lucas W3 IGN warning light

Yes, Peter C I should've said British applications :) . The basis of my "thesis" is that in any British hand book of the period I can just about guarantee that the explanation will read something like "As a safeguard against the ignition being left on....", and then later mention its relevance to ch...

Re: Lucas W3 IGN warning light

The most common explanation I've seen is that Lucas wanted to make the warning light as small as they could, and at the time there was no automotive globe suitable for the application. Instead they used a 2.5v torch globe (i.e. for a 2 x D cell torch) which combined small size, availability, low cos...

Re: Lucas W3 IGN warning light

The original values should be something like this: For a 6v system and 2.5v 0.2A globe: * resistor needs to drop 3.5v (6 - 2.5v) @ 0.2A * R (value of resistor in Ohms) = 3.5/0.2 R = 17.5 Ohms For a 12v system and 2.5v 0.2A globe * resistor needs to drop 9.5v (12 - 2.5v) @ 0.2A * R = 9.5/0.2 R = 47.5...

Re: Lucas W3 IGN warning light

You’re 100% correct Bill.
2.5v 0.2A Lucas C252A globe.
Gary-Jaycar have MES 2.5v 300mA globes in stock (p/n SL3210), if you're fabricating your own ballast resistors anyway, you can alter the value to suit the increased wattage.

Re: Best petrol for 32 Austin 10

Wish it was as easy as upping the octane to improve performance! Without submitting a wall of text the most elementary explanation is that increasing the octane number above the minimum required in a specific engine will not improve the performance without adjusting the ignition advance mapping to t...

Re: Best petrol for 32 Austin 10

I'm in NZ Dave, and I run my 14 on unleaded 91 (with no additives)-as did the previous owners to no apparent ill effect. FWIW, my opinion is lead substitute additives are a cure for an issue which in theory should be problematic, but in practice rarely is. Given the low power/low BMEP of the usual r...

Re: 1945 Austin 10 GS1 saloon

According to my info from stationary-engine dot co dot uk the 30VM4 is correct, but you will need one with the correct CS (Contract Number) stamped on the top of the float bowl to obtain the correct jetting, unless you want to experiment. The site itself appears to be defunct, I seem to recall readi...
