It may be a desperate remedy for a design fault . Something similar can happen to a traction engine going down a steep hill , when water can get carried over into the cylinder .

I should look at your local directories for spring winders . If they have a suitable section of material in stock then the price may not be as much as you feared .

You could always try a sash cramp , if you have such a thing , across the chassis to pinch it in a little bit .

A simple indexing setup will be sufficient for our sort of engines , I wonder if The Austin bothered much . Or Just scribe and dot a line from a tooth to the centre , or the keyway or drive hole .
