10/4 Oil Pressure

Post by Andrew » Tue Jun 09, 2020 5:48 pm

Hello!

I'm sure someone can tell me - what is the usual running oil pressure as displayed on the oil pressure gauge when driving along at a good steady 25 to 30mph in top gear?

The oil pressure gauge on my 10/4 appears to be working normally but the pressure appears quite high.

No engine problems and all running very sweetly. I've had the car for fifteen years now and the pressure is always good but since the last oil change
that I did a couple of months back the pressure reads higher.

Any info welcome.

Many thanks.

Andrew

Hi Andrew
Your normal HOT oil pressure should be 30 to 35 PSI at about 30 MPH. The cold oil pressure on starting up can be a lot higher and that is regulated by the oil pressure relief valve on the side of the engine block. Screw the regulator bolt out to reduce the cold oil pressure to about 38 ish psi and then use the locking nut to secure it in position.
If you have changed the grade of oil you are using that may account for the change in oil pressure. The ATDC advises the use of a straight 40 ASA grade oil for summer use.

Many thanks for these suggestions.

I have adjusted things and the pressure is now much better.
