Order from Club Spares:
  • item 961 = brass mesh for oil filter
  • item 039 = oil filter gasket

I'm in Australia. There seems to be lots of brass mesh available on line but I would like know exactly what grade is required. Concerned that if I don't get it right it will not filter properly or starve the pump.

Hi Dave,
Remember, this is a strainer, not a filter. The oil drains into the strainer bowl and permeates back into the sump.
The majority of the heavy particles will settle at the base of the strainer bowl and only light particles suspended in the hot oil are likely to be retained in the mesh. Since the most important thing is to ensure a supply of lubricant to the bearings we should ensure the minimum obstruction to the oil flow from the bowl to the sump.
In my opinion 50 strands to the inch will be adequate and should be commonly available.
